A note at the end of Deuteronomy

William Reeves recorded that, on a blank page at the end of Deuteronomy in the Irish Bible found with the bell, a note in the same hand as the ownership inscription recorded the death of Edmund’s father, Bernard Mulhollan, in 1758.

Deuteronomy contains passages concerning care for people in need, including strangers, orphans and widows. Was the choice of this place in the Bible deliberate, or was the blank page simply convenient? Reeves records the location but does not say why it was chosen. The question invites readers to consider the passage beside the family note.

These passages are elsewhere in Deuteronomy; the location of the note does not establish that Edmund selected either passage.

The record

The research identifies Edmond as Henry’s father and Bernard’s son, drawing on nineteenth-century accounts.
