Church lands at Ballyclog

The Ulster inquisitions record a yearly rent of two marks and a cosherie from the termon land of Ballyneclage. They also describe the herenagh’s share of the cost of maintaining the parish church. The corbe is not named; the return does not identify a keeper of the bell.

Names in the depositions

Witness statements collected during and after the wars name people in several communities. In 1642 Hugh Cuningham listed “Coll mother o Mulhallon” of Killelagh. In 1653 Captain Bryan Mulhallen described killings at Ballymartin; another witness, Donell McGillmurtin, named him in an account of the same events.

Statements also name Patrick O’Mallan and Fardorragh O’Mallon in Tyrone. The records include more than one captain named Patrick O’Mallan; their identities should not be merged without further evidence. These statements record witnesses’ accounts and allegations, and do not mention the bell.
